The industry standard
Dream Job #2 – Testing Your Chops to The Limit
Remember the internet bubble? I had a front row seat with the news magazine whose mission was to chronicle the most important shift our modern economy - the shift to the internet economy.
The Industry Standard magazine was founded my John Battelle and Jonathan Weber in 1998. I start as Deputy Design Director to, Design Director, Daniel Carter pre launch. We created the prototype edition, then I continued to work with the magazine for 3 years until it's bust with the bubble 2002. In 2000 I was promoted to Design Director. In the position I helped grow the magazine from 68 to 330 pages weekly, and the art staff from 4 to 35.
As Design Director, I managed the Art Department and it's budgets. Coordinated with the editorial department. I was responsible for the over all magazine look and feel, oversaw all art commissioning, and designed key marketing pieces such as covers and cover stories. I also responsible for the designing and coordinating new projects including the design, hire and launch the European edition in London.
